A credit freeze is useful if you think that you have been a victim of identity theft. A credit freeze is a request made by you to the credit bureaus to restrict access to your credit report. It will prevent new creditors from accessing your credit report without your express authorization. Companies with which you have an existing credit account, however, will still be able to access your credit report. If you put a credit freeze on your report, you may have a harder time obtaining credit quickly.
You can initiate a credit freeze by contacting the credit bureaus either online or through the mail.
You will have to provide certain identifying information such as a current driver’s license and the credit bureaus may charge a small fee for initiating a freeze.
